In short:

Mischivious children find themselves alone and helpless in thier big mansion of Cherry Tree Lane after their last governness has left them. Mary Poppins, their new nanny, is going to change their quiet lives.
Not anithing like the movie, this Mary Poppins is prim, strict and never tells anybody anything. Arriving mysteriously with the east wind one day, Mary Poppins becomes nanny to Jane, Michael and the twins John and Barbara Banks. Life in that family is suddently filled with wonderful magical adventures that burst on the unsuspecting children. Although the seemingly cold and conceited Mary Poppins always denies that magic ever happened, the children find proof it did.

More about Mary Poppins:

The Mary Poppins books have been very popular ever since Mary Poppins appeared in 1934. But the publication of new Mary Poppins writings by L.P.Travers hasn't been noticed much. They make up a graceful, endearing, slightly melancholy coda to the series.
What is really well-known throughout the world is Walt Disney's version of 1964, with an unforgettable Julie Andrews playing the magical nanny and Dick van Dyke as the chimney sweep singer.
