In short:
Petit Chose can be considered to be an autobiographical novel, for daudet spent part of his childhood in a boarding school. The book is divided into two parts and it is written in first person narrator. Daniel Eyssette, also called Petit Chose (Little Thing) is the main character.
His family being bankrupt, Daniel is forced to work as supervisor in a school, but the other student illtreat him.
The second part is set in Paris, where Daniel's life is also rather difficult. He wants to become a poet and falls in love with a girl.
