OSCAR WILDE

Irish author (1854-1900)

Biography:

Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin. At a very early age he began writing poems and plays, which were meant to be really successful. But his private life was considered to be scandalous by English society. He faced trials and spent two years in prison, where he wrote his most tragic poems.
He flew to France, where he died in 1900.

His most famous works are The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), a gripping story about beauty, devil and human nature. The Canterville Ghost (written in 1887), The Selfish Giant and Other Tales and The Happy Prince (1888) and Lord Arthur Saville's Crimes and other Stories (1891) are a must for young readers.

In 1998 Brian Gilbert directed a film devoted to Oscar Wilde's life, showing how society rejected one of the greatest writers ever.
