ANNA SEWELL
English author (1820-1877)
Biography:
Anna Sewell was born in Nortfolk in 1820. Due to her disability, she used to move with horse-drawn carriages. From this experience, she leanrt to love animals, specially horses. She was not a prolific writer, for she wrote only one book, Black Beauty (1877), the tale of a mistreated horse. The book is based on a first-person narrartive voice: the horse. This innovating humanization of an animal made the book a real success. The animal keeps strength and good temper throughout his suffering and the story was extremely influential as pro-animal propaganda but it is also an extremely exciting and moving children’s story.
