Writing background :
Throughout my childhood I read a great deal. I loved libraries and bookshops. But it didn’t occur to me to try and be a writer for quite a long time. Back then I wanted to be a visual artist of some kind, and went to art school, following which I worked in London as a graphic designer and photographer. Later on I became a painter and sculptor, a press officer for an arts centre and a travelling circus, and an antiques dealer. Over the years I had a lot of adventures and met a lot of interesting people.
It wasn’t until my first book for children was published in 1995 that I realised that I was now very well equipped to be a writer. Children’s books are the perfect vehicle for the imaginative writer, kids being far more receptive to outlandish propositions than most adults. I’ve now published several novels, more than twenty stories, and picture books that have gone into a dozen languages.
My next project is a ‘trilogy of ideas’ commissioned by Orchard Books. These novels will be aimed at older children and imaginative adults who still have a spring in their step.
