LOUISA MAY ALCOTT

American author (1832-1881)

Biography:

Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1832. She was taught by her own father, who was teacher and philosopher, H.D.Thoreau and R.W.Emerson. At a very early age she began writing tales. When she was only 16, she wrote Flower Fables (1954). She published her first novel in 1864. Three years later she became manager of a children's journal and decides to write a story meant for young female readers: Little Women, 1868. The story depicts American life during the second half of the 19th century and it was so successful that she published a sequel in 1869. She portrayed herself in the famous character of Jo March.
She was a very prolific writer and, just to name some of her other works, she is the author of An Old Fashioned Girl (1870), Little Men: Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys (1871) and Eight cousins or the Aunt Hill (1875). She died in Boston in 1888.
